Achillion Palace (Sissi’s Palace)
The Achilleion Palace can be found in the Village of Gastouri, 10 km’s south west of the town of Corfu. When you take the National Road Corfu-Achillion and continue up to the area of Ponti, after the left turn, you follow the serpentine road uphill, while the beauty of this part of the island unfolds before your eyes, with olive groves and rich flora.
The stunning appearance of this stately palace takes the visitor back in history to when the palace was inhabited by two great figures from European history whose only common bond was their adoration for Corfu, Greece and its culture, Empress Elisabeth of Austria (known as ‘Sissi’) and Kaiser William II of Germany. Even before a visitor has entered the palace of Achilleion , they will feel the greatness endowed by looking at the even the first statues that inhabit the outer areas, all inspired by ancient Greek mythology.


Capodistrias Museum
The Capodistrias Museum – Centre of for Capodistrian Studies is the first and only museum dedicated to the life and legacy of Ioannis Capodistrias, a distinguished European diplomat and politician of the 19th century, whose name is linked with the vision and struggles for peace in Europe and the establishment of the Greek State as he was the first Governor of Greece.
The museum is housed in the heritage monument of Koukouritsa, for centuries a Capodistrias’ family country estate, situated near the village of Evropouli, just 7km from Corfu town. The permanent exhibition displays important artefacts and documents of historical significance, giving visitors the opportunity to explore the history of Corfu, Europe and Greece through the life of the first Governor of Greece. At the Museum’s lush hilltop garden visitors can explore Corfu’s countryside with uninterrupted views over the island. In the garden, visitors can also enjoy the Museum Cafe and various cultural summer events.
Palace of St. Michael and St. George
The Palace of St. Michael and St George was built by the architect G. Whitmore in the years 1819-1824 A.D. , when the British Commissioner Thomas Maitland was in office. It is the most important monument of the British administration and one of the first neoclassical buildings in Greece. It was built from Maltese stone.
The name “Palace of Saints Michael and George” was chosen because in the building were not only offices and the residence of the British Commissioner, but also the headquarters of the namesake battalion. The facade is decorated with a series of Doric columns, interrupted by two majestic triumphal archways , and is curved at both sides defining the north end of the Espianada square. The cornice is decorated with the prow of a stone ship symbolizing Corfu.


Temple of Artemidos Gorgos
The archaic temple of Artemidos Gorgos was built in the beginning of the 6th century BC and is one of the earliest stone Doric temples of Greece. This was the temple of the patron saint of the city and It is located a short distance from the wall of Neratziha.
The impressive and famous pediment of the church is kept and exhibited in the archeological museum of the city, but the visitor can admire the large altar (one of the most well-preserved in Greece) at the archeological site.
